Dear Families,
I hope you are settling into a routine of getting everyone up and ready for school! The staff and I are truly happy to have your children back in our care. Thank you for trusting us with them - they give us so much joy!
The Mill Valley School District is committed to building Character Education into our curriculum. To achieve this, Edna Maguire's Life Skills Program helps students gain the tools they need to be good citizens. Each month, our teachers select a skill for your children to incorporate in their day. At the end of the month, we hold an all-school assembly and hand out Life Skill Awards to students in each grade who did an especially good job of practicing that skill. We also hand out Random Acts of Life Skill Tickets all month!
September's Life Skill is RESPONSIBILITY. We're encouraging kids to respond to people, animals, things and circumstances--moment by moment--with decisions based on integrity and caring. The goal is to help them understand what's right and wrong. By developing a strong "moral compass," they can analyze what's going on at any particular moment and make the best choice about how to respond.
In other news, we had a Staff Development Day on August 23. We spent time sharing our summer vacation moments (you can read about them on the office bulletin board), but more importantly, we revisited our school's Vision and Mission Statements. These statements drive what we do as a learning community and describe our beliefs about how we should interact with students. They cover a wide range of topics, including curriculum delivery, building self-esteem and character, encouraging environmental stewardship and fostering critical thinking. This year, I also tied the statements to the PTA and its connection to the vision and mission of our school. You can read them here.
It's important for all of us to adopt our school's practices and beliefs so we can optimize each child's opportunity to learn and grow. When we all act together, our children benefit. Thank you for your help!
All the Best,
Lisa Zimmer

Dear Families,
As many of you might have seen in the paper, each school in California receives what is called an API (Academic Performance Index) score. All of our Mill Valley schools earned scores of over 900, with Edna Maguire receiving 947.
The API is a single number, ranging from a low of 200 to a high of 1000, which reflects a school's performance level, based on the results of statewide testing. Its purpose is to measure the academic performance and growth of schools. The Public Schools Accountability Act (PSAA), a landmark state law passed in 1999, established the API to create a new academic accountability system for K-12 public education in California.
The API is calculated by converting a student's performance on statewide assessments across multiple content areas into points on the API scale. These points are then averaged across all students and all tests. The result is the API.
Key features of the API:
- The API is based on an improvement model. It is used to measure the academic growth of a school. The API from one year is compared to the API from the prior year to measure improvement.
- The API is a cross-sectional look at student achievement. It does not track individual student progress across years but rather compares snapshots of school.
- The API is used to rank schools. A school is compared to other schools statewide and to 100 other schools that have similar demographic characteristics.
- The API is currently a school-based requirement only under state law.
This information was obtained from the California Department of Education website.
I hope this helps! I am very proud of our students and teachers for the great work they do every day!
All the Best,
Lisa Zimmer

Your contribution of $7 per child helps us provide emergency supplies for every Edna student. The money enables us to keep a well-stocked inventory of up-to-date medical supplies, blankets, snacks and other essential items. It also goes toward the expense of maintaining the emergency supplies container and water tank. And it helps us cover the costs for students requiring financial assistance. Please make your contribution today. Thank you!

Regular attendance plays an important role in student achievement. If your child has an unexcused absence, he will be responsible for making up any work he missed. With enough notice, teachers will try to provide students with assignments and homework during an absence. However, many assignments can't be made up, which may negatively affect a student's grades.
Students who are out of school due to unexcused absences for more than 15 consecutive student school days will be removed from their school rolls. They must re-enroll with the district upon return. There's no guarantee that, upon re-enrolling, a student will return to the school and class that she left.

Edna Maguire is Beautiful!
By Ronnie Sharpe
The one and only Beautification Day
Was a huge success.
Thank you to all who ventured out
We at Edna are truly blessed.
Volunteers picked up the trash
They weeded, dug and sowed
Replanted flowers in front of the office and hall
So we can all enjoy watching them grow.
They painted window trims and garden snake
And swept the leaves into a great big pile
Now Edna Maguire is sparkling clean
Let's keep it that way for a while.
So if you see garbage on the ground
Putting it in the trash is a start.
Every little bit of effort from YOU helps
WE NEED YOU TO DO YOUR PART!
Thanks to the following parents, students, future students, and staff who lent a hand at this year's one and only Beautification Day:
Lee, Jonas and Ellery Barnes; Gary Batroff; Barbara Bleckman; Jodie, Natalie and Ella Bricker; Luca Citroen; Tom, Mara and Emily Conner; Laura Figueirinhas; Tracy Ginther; Debra Sigel and Ari Gold; Kit Harris; Michael Clark and Louis Hexter; Isaiah and Josh Clark-Hexter; Janie Karp; Ingrid and Mark Lin; Leslie Meyers; Karen Olson; Jet Russell; Will and Eric Schreiber; Ronnie and Amelia Sharpe; Natasha Wells; and Amy, Rachel & Hannah Whitelaw.

As you probably know, schools across California have had their financial resources reduced by the state by $17 billion over the past three years. In Marin County, our schools have lost $54 million dollars. Last month, the State of California announced it was postponing until October providing our schools with funding they were supposed to receive this month. This means that $6,715,781 Marin County public schools were depending on to meet their financial obligations will not be available for at least 30 days.
Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools, is urging ALL residents of California to rise up and say "ENOUGH!" Click here to read her complete letter. I recently came across what I think is a great article about how to raise children with healthy character. I felt this information was simply too good not to pass on. Dr. Kevin Ryan--who is affiliated with the Boston University School of Education--wrote the article, and I took the liberty of augmenting it with some of my own thoughts.-- Claudia Trinklein-Engman, School Counselor
How Specifically Do Parents Raise Children of Healthy Character?
1. Put parenting first on your agenda. Our world is filled with a multitude of personal demands. But by far the most important one--and the one that will reap the most rewards-- is good, solid parenting. Absolutely nothing can substitute for positive concern and guidance from a child's parent. As parents, we do not have a huge amount of time each day-- or week, for that matter-- to spend with our children. Make that time count! Include your children in your lives. And include yourself in theirs.
2. Be a positive and good example. And if you "blow it" (and we all do at some point) admit your mistake and try to correct it. 3. Watch carefully what your child is exposed to. A child of any age is like a sponge. The books they read, the songs they sing, and the videos they watch are continuously delivering and exposing our youngsters to moral and immoral messages. We, as parents, need to control what our children see and hear.
4. Always use language of character yourself.
5. When you need to punish your children, do it from a reasonable perspective. Children need boundaries, limits, and an understanding of right and wrong. Punishment needs to teach our children how to make better decisions. It should be a way that children learn how to be productive members of society.
6. Listen to your children. Take them seriously and set aside specific time for only them.
7. Get involved with your child's school.
8. Make a big, consistent deal about the daily family meal. It is where so much teaching and values are passed on to our children.
9. Don't just preach good moral character - model it for your child. We need to have good work habits, strong self-discipline and kind behavior to others.

Did you know that 23 percent of fatal car accidents happen on local and residential roads? And according to the World Health Organization, car crashes are the number one cause of death for young persons, worldwide, between the ages of 10 and 24.
In the rush to get our kids to and from school, it's easy to get careless with our driving. Rolling through stop signs, driving too fast or being distracted by cell phones are just a few of the bad habits that can have deadly consequences--for our children, ourselves or others. Please remember to drive responsibly, especially around our schools. And be sure to check out this flyer from Street Smarts Marin for some great tips on protecting our kids on-- and around-- our roads.

Education Francaise of the Bay Area (EFBA), a local non-profit, is launching the second year of its after school French program. We offer courses for both beginners and more advanced French speakers. Classes begin October 4.
Beginner classes will take place right after school on the Edna Maguire campus. Classes for experienced speakers will be held at other locations in Mill Valley. The beginner classes will meet once a week while higher-level classes will meet twice a week. All classes are 90 minutes.
Tuition will range from $18 to $21 per hour depending on how many students register for the program; we will announce the actual amount on September 17. All tuition fees go toward teacher and assistant salaries, facilities expenses and insurance. As a non-profit association, our goal is to offer classes at the lowest possible cost. Please contact Catherine Klifa at 415- 877-1072 or millvalleyfrench@gmail.com for more information. Or visit our website, www.efba.us.
Please Note: Learning a foreign language requires dedication from students AND teachers. We ask parents and students to commit to this program for the entire school year. This allows us to provide the best teachers so your children can get the most out of their French classes.
