And don't forget THE GARDEN CONTEST! The sponsoring grade with the biggest turnout of students for their Garden Work Day wins a party--either pizza or ice cream-- at the end of the year. Contact Saor Stetler (sstetler@earthlink.net) for more information.

Now Open: Edna Maguire's New Owl Inn!

If you look up at two of the trees past our softball field and near the bike path, you'll see Edna's two new owl boxes. They were installed to provide homes and nesting sights for Marin's native barn owls. Be sure to keep an eye out for signs that owl families have moved into the inn! And remember--observing is great, but please don't disturb the owl homes.

Thank you to Julie Hanft of The Hungry Owl Project for consulting with us and locating the ideal spot for our owl houses. Also, thank you to Randy Harris with Artistry In Trees and Edna parent for hanging the homes in the trees. And thanks to all of YOU for protecting our shared environment and welcoming the barn owls to Edna Maguire! Contact Ronnie Sharpe (ronniesharpe@me.com) if you have any questions.

Edna Students' "Fun-Raiser" Featured on Malaria No More Blog

Kudos to Edna students Ella Bricker, Natalie Bricker, Jamie Snell and Carly Toole for raising almost $600 for Malaria No More with their "Fun-Raiser." The girls were recently featured in the "Super Supporters" segment of the Malaria No More blog for their outstanding work! You go, girls!

Art Show Thank Yous

Edna's art show was a HUGE success thanks to the support of our wonderful art teachers Amy Faulkner, Jackie LaLanne, and Katie Mostert. We also want to thank the many parents who helped prep and display our students' beautiful 2-D and ceramic pieces for the show: Mari Allen, Suzanne Alpert, Suzanne di Bianca, Christine Freda, Lisa Gilmore, Erin Kelly, Warren Levine, Sean Norton, Ronnie Sharpe, Lauren Snell, Tina Taylor, Justine Whitehead, and Edna alum Teresa Baradaran. Special thanks also go out to Heidi Fulton who helped prep, display, clean-up and donated treats!

We also appreciate Barbara Bleckman, Heidi Fulton, Lisa Gilmore, Vyvianne Kiriakis, Lisa Levin, Ted Lieser, Deb Luster, Trina Rivera, Kathy Sonderby, and Cathy Wilmoth for their generous donations of homemade goodies and sparkling water for the evening reception.

Edna's Family Dance was a Rockin' Success!

Thank you to everyone who came out to cut a rug at the Family Dance. And a special thanks to Close Enough, featuring Edna dad Chris Newell, for providing a great mix of live music that kept us out on the dance floor, and to chair Kit Harris for coordinating the event! Edna families had a blast boogying together-- and with Principal Zimmer. Our Green Team provided tons of yummy treats for hungry dancers and earned $243 for their efforts. That's a lot of bread they'll put to good use for our environment! All in all, it was a sweet pre-Valentine's celebration for everyone. Check out the photo album!

Kiddo! News

Kiddo! Funds at Work at Edna Maguire

In the last issue of the Pony, we provided a few highlights of how Kiddo! Mini Grants are enriching our students' education. Below is a more detailed article from Kiddo! explaining how these grants are being used by Edna teachers this year.

Congratulations to Edna Maguire teachers Nora Thomas, Jenny Leogrande, Lisa Stapp, and Judith Barry for winning Kiddo! Mini-Grants for this school year! Teresa Shern, Aubry O'Connor and Adam Sanchez will also be receiving funds for "America Sings" through Kiddo!'s Drama Block Grants. Thanks to your generous donations, Kiddo! can provide annual grants to our teachers to foster innovative programs in their classrooms. The $17,000 that funded these programs included a generous donation of $5,000 from the Mill Valley Rotary Club. The remaining $12,000 was raised by parents at Kiddo!'s 2009 Spring Gala who lifted their paddles for "Fund-a-Need."

Thanks to Nora Thomas's grant, Edna Maguire students will attend a performance of the String Quartet Eos Ensemble, led by violinist and Edna Maguire parent, Craig Reiss. The interactive performance will demonstrate such elements of music as harmony, melody, rhythm, pitch, and tempo. Students will have an opportunity to conduct, sing, and rearrange a "musical puzzle."

Jenny Leogrande's grant will also benefit the classrooms of Julie Bremer, Nandita Stachon, and Shana Stewart by bringing local dance instructor Annie Leese (Artistic Director, Performing Arts Academy of Marin) to Edna's first graders. Her "American Dance through the Decades" program will begin with a 1910 soft shoe routine and culminate with 1970's disco. These dance classes will provide a physical and creative outlet to the students as well as an education in American culture.

Lisa Stapp is excited to introduce multi-cultural history to Edna Maguire. Her grant, in combination with PTA funding, will bring the Eth-Noh-Tec troupe to the entire school. This innovative performance company will showcase Asian stories and folktales, bringing to life this ancient and influential culture.

Judith Barry submitted an application on behalf of all Edna third grade teachers including: Katie Govi, Kimba Lackey and Carrie Morgan. This award will allow the third grade students to generate and perform a musical "wrap/review" of their academic year of learning. This musical synthesis will present their year of learning, while allowing the children to gain a deeper appreciation for performing/visual arts. The act of creating the musical for the school community will encourage the students to develop oral communication, social, and life skills. The project will culminate in a performance for their parents and the school community.

"We are extremely fortunate to be able to enhance our children's already rich curricula with these creative programs," said Trisha Garlock, Kiddo!'s executive director. "But none of it would be possible without the incredible support of our parents and community at large."

For more information on the Kiddo! Mini-Grant program and this year's recipients, please visit www.Kiddo.org or call the Kiddo! office at 389-7789.

Make a Difference at Edna

Do you want to help Edna Maguire continue to be the great school it is? Would you like to get more involved at Edna? If so, we need you!

The Edna PTA Nominating Committee needs to fill three PTA Executive Board positions - VP of Student Well Being, Auditor and Recording Secretary. We are looking for enthusiastic people with good organizational skills and attention to detail. You'll attend monthly board meetings and, if you're VP of Student Well being, oversee chairs of some fun committees. All three roles provide a great opportunity to make a visible contribution to our school and play an important role in the PTA.

The PTA is also recruiting chairs to head up a number of PTA committees, such as Book Fair Evening Event, Woody's Ice Cream Social, and Community Outreach, to name just a few. These roles offer a great way to get involved and contribute to Edna in specific areas.

If you are interested and would like more information, please contact Deborah Huber (dhuber4@aol.com) or Kit Harris (kitter01@comcast.net)

Principally Speaking

Dear Family,

Our school flag is once again flying high! Our lovely front-office manager, Leslie Fielder, and indispensable custodian, Pat Barron, recently trained the Student Council how to raise and lower the flag. Students are now responsible for this daily task.

The council has also been busy writing and gathering articles for our first 2011edition of Eye on Edna, our student newspaper. The paper will include reviews of books, restaurants, movies and music, plus sports stories and other exciting features. Look for it at the end of this month!

I want to extend a HUGE thank you to Nancy Turner and Gideon Bernstein, parents of second-grader June Bernstein, for helping the Student Council run our See's Candy sale. The money raised will help fund the fifth grade's field trip to Walker Creek, fourth grade's trip to Sutter's Fort and other PTA activities.

Edna students recently participated in an All School Writing Exercise. Working in teams, students used pre-writing activities, such as reading aloud, looking at pictures and discussing vocabulary, before writing stories inspired by the prompt "Something Happens in the Forest." Our teachers will gather the stories and use them to discuss ways in which students can improve their writing through word choice, content, organization, voice, sentence fluency and other key elements of good writing.

All of our teachers are working to strengthen the common language they use to talk to students about their writing, and to share strategies for teaching writing. Teachers across the school are reading the works of different authors out loud to students. This is just one example of how they are encouraging kids to read like writers and write like readers! Our teachers will have the opportunity to hone their existing strategies for teaching writing--and learn some new ones-- when they meet with a writing expert during our next Staff Development Day, March 18.

Writing isn't the only part of our curriculum where exciting things are happening. On Thursday, March 31, we will hold our first Science Fair! This optional, independent event will give students in third through fifth grades a chance to practice scientific inquiry. They'll attend a presentation to get all the details and--only if they are interested in participating--a packet of information. Graduate students from UCSF will be at the fair to work with our budding scientists and provide feedback on their projects.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the Family Dance this Saturday. The amazing band, Close Enough, featuring Chris Newell--dad of Edna third-grader, Aidan Newell--will be performing! Come join the fun!

All the Best,

Lisa Zimmer

Document Camera for the art room: Makes it easier for students to share art, focus and engage in larger classroom settings.
